Lou Doillon has tried on a few hats: model, actress, muse, mother. She starred in her first film at six, spent her teens modelling haute couture, and became a mother at 19. Now, the daughter of transatlantic pop icon Jane Birkin and sister of actress-singer Charlotte Gainsbourg has launched a music career. A fashionable folly? Far from it.
Her debut album, Places, collected a French Grammy last year and she’s since been touring across Europe, the US and Canada with a mix of songs that blend folk intonations with country and blues flourishes. At the ripe old age of 30, Doillon sings with a husky, world-weary expression that’s equal parts endearing and seductive.
Produced and arranged by French singer-songwriter Étienne Daho, and mixed by Zdar (Phoenix, The Rapture, Beastie Boys, Cat Power), the album track Questions and Answers sees its creator on tour, painting owls in the back seat of a bus, eating breakfast in her PJs and reflecting on lost love and her yearning for certainty.
