Seun Kuti

Every August for the past 15 years radio stations around the world (especially in Lagos, Nigeria) have marked the death of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti by airing programs dedicated to his music. For the unititiated, they’re a sure-fire way to be seduced not only by Kuti’s hypnotic rhythms but by tales of his wild, hedonistic life. This is the counter-revolutionary composer who set a ressed like an African Elvis, showed WOMADelaide and the Syney Opera House that Afrobeat still has its punch. In November, Seun returns to our shores to play the Australasian World Music Expo and tour the country with his father’s band Egypt 80. It’s one thing to hear Fela’s pulse on the radio but quite another to dance to it in person, so find your own Elvis costume and get going …
